Mission Impossible 4 aka Mission Possible Ghost Protocol was a real success. Not only the film did well in theaters but it totally deserved it: the plot was solid and there was much action. So Paramount is now looking ahead and planning Mission Impossible 5.
MI4 was originally set to be the last installment starring Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, with Jeremy Renner's new character taking over the team. But don't worry there was a change of plans since then:
"I think [Ethan Hunt handing over the IMF torch to Jeremy Renne] might have been the plan earlier on. But as the film progressed and we enjoyed it so much I think the idea of Ethan Hunt retiring fell by the wayside. Tom Cruise suddenly remembered why he loved doing these films so much and suddenly thought ‘well maybe I do want to do more?’."
Actor Simon Pegg
So can be pretty sure Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg will return. Would be great if Jeremy Renner was to reprise his role too. Director Brad Bird said he would be open to return to helm the sequel but that that's unlikely because "what's fun about the series is that they always pull in a different director and try to get a different kind of take on the premise".
There's no official announcement yet, but Adam Goodman, president of the Paramount Film Group, said that the plan is to first make
Top Gun 2 and then Mission Impossible 5.
